Thelma Pepper honoured with exhibition at Remai Fashionable Artwork Museum

Guests to the Remai Fashionable Artwork Museum will discover a brand new exhibition referred to as Thelma Pepper: Unusual Lady. A Retrospective.

It options the work of native resident and photographer, Thelma Pepper, who handed away on the age of 100 in December.

Described as a superb photographer, Pepper was greatest recognized for her black-and-white snapshots of the folks of the Prairies.

A lot of her items are of her household and the Sherbrooke Group Centre, the place she photographed lots of the residents.

“She was volunteering at a long-term care facility studying to the residence and thru that have,” stated Sandra Fraser, collections curator at Remai Fashionable.  “Attending to know the residence and listening to their tales. She was so captivated.”

Fraser says this was across the time she was re-igniting her curiosity in pictures. Pepper finally made audio recordings of the care residence residents as nicely.

Fraser provides her work displayed lots of heat and curiosity.

Fraser says Pepper was born in Nova Scotia, she bought a grasp’s diploma in biology from McGill College, the place she met her husband. They then moved to Saskatoon in 1947 the place she would spend nearly all of her grownup life.

The exhibition is the first-ever collaboration between USask Artwork Galleries and Assortment and the Remai Fashionable.

“One factor that was actually necessary, was the feminist lens and the strategy to girls that Thelma embodied had in her work,” stated Fraser. “On this exhibition, we centered primarily on girls as topics. We put her in dialogue with 5 different feminine photographers.”

Pepper was awarded plenty of honours together with the Lieutenant Governor’s Arts Award-Lifetime Achievement in 2014, and the Saskatchewan Order of Advantage in 2018.

Fraser provides it wasn’t till her 60s earlier than she dived into an curiosity in pictures.
